Several authors are of the view that up to the republican period, the importance of Sabin Etxea is more sentimental than political. This was indeed the case. It was from 1931 onward that the house of the founder of Basque nationalism entered the greatest splendour in its history. During the Republic there will be intense political and cultural activity in such a symbolic place.

Sabin Etxea is proposed in July 1931 in response to the need of the Ensanche nationalists to have their own Batzoki, a place where they can operate without travelling to the nearest sites in Abando or to that of Basque Youth in Bilbao.
