Following its long absence, Basque nationalism returns finally to the home of its founder. At first it was thought to instal there the offices of the EAJ/PNV, but later it was decided to set up a cultural foundation as a permanent tribute to Sabino Arana, and to have this occupy the Sabin Etxea site.
The Comisión Pro Fundación Sabino Arana, chaired by Luis Basterretxea, is set up to promote the project. Involved in the project are outstanding members of Basque artistic and cultural life.
In order to initiate this ambitious project it was necessary to apply for a loan from a savings institute. It was endeavoured to finance the project and the interest on the loan by selling a bust of Sabino Arana and a stela in homage to Gernika, respectively by Jorge Oteiza and Néstor Basterretxea.
