Since Sabino Arana needed a medium in which to continue setting forth his ideas, on 2 May 1897 Baserritarra comes out. It will have a brief existence, since it too will be closed down by the Civil Governor.

On 24 April 1898 a demonstration by Spanish sympathizers passes through the streets of Bilbao. When they arrive outside it, they savagely throw stones at the home of the Arana Goiri brothers. Nearly eighty stones are found inside.

Sabino Arana is again jailed, this time for sending a telegram to President Roosevelt in the US, congratulating him for having liberated Cuba from Spanish dominion.

From prison he forwards the article "Grave y trascendental" [Serious and Important] for publication in the press. Therein he proposes the setting up of a party that will seek to achieve the highest level of autonomy for Euzkadi. The true intention of this article went with him to his tomb.

Before continuing, we should remember that on 6 September 1899 the property at No. 16 Ibáñez de Bilbao was acquired by Luis, Sabino, and Paulina Arana Goiri through third parties. In virtue of division the property was awarded to Luis Arana.
